as much work as you put into this, and how obvious this "repair" is after its complete, you could have actually cut out the rust and repaired it correctly with metal. even if you didnt weld the stuff you could have body bonded the metal and at least it'd last more than 4 or 5 months.

That will last maybe 5 months. Go to junk yard chop out those rocker sections out of a junker with less rust damage. Cut out existing rusty rockers of your car then weld new ones in. Then that’s a 20 year fix.

Could be a malfunctioning compression release. On B&S engines, the compression release in built in, as a lobe on the cam shaft. The lobe slightly opens the exhaust valve until the engine hits about 600 rpm. But, starters have been known to become weak or drag over time. I usually rebuild them as soon as they begin to drag. That cost runs $10-20 and you still have an OEM quality starter. Oh, and never crank a starter more than 30 seconds and then allow it to cool for a minute or more. Your starter will thank you with years of service.
